Mississippi Cannabis Trade Association Statement on Special Session for Proposed Medical Cannabis Bill

We are certainly encouraged by the news confirming the presentation of a proposed medical cannabis bill to Governor Reeves. As confirmed by top officials in the Mississippi Legislature, the detailed provisions of this bill have now been agreed upon by both the House and Senate after thoughtful consideration and extensive discussion. However, the media reports the ongoing political tug-of-war between Governor Reeves and the Legislature, indicating further delay in the forward momentum of Mississippi’s medical cannabis program.

In November 2020, an overwhelming majority of Mississippi voters raised their voice in unison in favor of implementing the medical cannabis program set forth in Initiative 65. Despite the unfortunate invalidation of the ballot initiative process by the Mississippi Supreme Court (and thus, Initiative 65 itself), the Mississippi Legislature continued to work tirelessly to craft a medical cannabis bill reflective of their constituents’ intent. The MSCTA thanks them for their successful effort, and now turns confidently to Governor Reeves to champion the will of the people, heed the recommendation of his legislative leaders, and utilize his executive power to call a special session to pass this bill, just as he promised he would.

To impede the implementation of Mississippi’s cannabis program after legislative consensus only deprives those citizens in need of its medicinal benefits, and cripples the promising economic boost offered by its accompanied revenue and employment opportunities. The MSCTA has provided sound statistics to members of the Legislature on how the medical cannabis industry will transform our State by offering opportunity and growth at a time when such hope is needed. Governor Reeves has repeatedly stated he will call a special session to implement this program when an agreement is reached, and now is the time. The MSCTA, the voters, and the Mississippi Legislature have all signaled their readiness, and we feel confident that Governor Reeves will fulfill his promise to the citizens of Mississippi by creating the forum to make this program a reality.
